If you are currently living in 2017, I have no doubt you have heard the word “probiotic” before. Everyone’s talking about it. Health professionals, celebrities, and probably your grandmother. Sometimes you just nod your head in agreement. “Yes, probiotics are good.” However, do you truly understand what it is and where its benefits lie?
Probiotics are live bacteria that have been proven to be great for your health, specifically your digestive system. The term bacteria just sounds terrifying. Why would someone willingly consume bacteria?! It’s what diseases are, right?! Your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. While probiotics are actually naturally found in your body, sometimes you need them to be replaced (antibiotics: the silent killer).
So what does it do? Well, what rhymes with “do”? Probiotics help move food through your tum. It’s helpful for people with IBS, IBD, and even diarrhea. It helps break down food and keeps everything running smoothly!
“Well, what can I buy that has it?” you may be asking. The most common sources of probiotics is actually dairy products like yogurt, milk, and cheeses. Ironic considering what we all know about dairy. There are actually many vegan products out there that contain probiotics! If you’re looking for an easy and delicious way to get started, I highly recommend GoodBelly Probiotic Juice Drink. It’s delicious and you’ll definitely feel the effects. At least I did! It’s about $3-$4 a bottle and you are supposed to drink a cup a day until it’s done.
Other vegan sources of probiotics are:
- Kimchi (make sure it’s vegan)
- Some soy/nut milks
- Kombucha (obviously)
- Supplements (the more obvious one)
- Vegan yogurts (some are fortified with probiotics now!)
If you’re having specific digestive issues currently or you just want to start taking care of your tum, I highly recommend you start taking probiotics. If you already do, let me know how it’s been working for you! Happy tums= happy life!
